Let's Begin Yoga! Sunday Morning Introduction to Yoga with Mari Muraoka
A basic Hatha Yoga class for beginners through intermediate practitioners.
Connect with your breath and move carefully through each pose.
We explain basic asanas and discuss effects such as easing shoulder and lower-back discomfort.
Without comparing yourself to others or your past self, or becoming caught up in differences between sides, simply feel and accept your present body and mind and explore what feels comfortable.
Experience how the mind softens when the body releases.
We especially welcome complete beginners and people returning after a break.
Yoga is time to be kind to yourself: notice how your body feels today, recognize your current emotions, and observe your thoughts objectively.
That time gradually brings clarity inside. What do you truly want?
Explore the effort that is right for you — neither pushing too hard nor doing too little.
Yoga is something everyone can enjoy, regardless of age, gender, body shape, experience, flexibility, or background.
Join us to feel happier in mind and body!
Recommended if you want to try yoga, have just begun, practice regularly but not weekly, feel held back by gender, age, body size, or flexibility, find taking the first step difficult for any reason, or want to move and feel energized.
The quiet after yoga can enrich everyday life. Let's make yoga part of our routine and feel good together.
Example class flow
A short check-in: share how your body and mind feel.
Release the legs: toes, ankles, calves, thighs, and hips.
Breathing: turn attention inward.
Upper-body stretching with the breath.
Sun Salutations: move with awareness of breath and poses.
Flow: move through a sequence.
Savasana: lie on your back and release effort throughout the body.
Finish.
Also welcome: those who want to restart or enjoy yoga, soften body and mind, or live with ongoing discomfort such as migraines, shoulder tension, lower-back discomfort, tension, or stress.
Participants' comments
“We began slowly and then moved plenty. In balance poses I am gradually learning to feel my center. Thank you — I'll return.”
“It was my first yoga class, but the bright, warm teaching made me want to come again.”
“We always begin by releasing the toes. Each time I realize how rarely I notice them. The class makes me want to care more for my body.”
“The teacher's cheerful words make me feel brighter and more energetic. We also move enough to refresh my mood. I'll return.”
Instructor: Mari Muraoka
Through dance, community musicals, travel and international exchange in around twenty countries, and teaching in elementary and junior high schools, I have helped create many different spaces and enjoyed many encounters and opportunities to learn.
The diversity of people's qualities cannot be measured by someone else's or society's standards.
Through yoga, I hope to support everyday lives in which people bloom in their own way, feel healthy in mind and body, and enjoy themselves.
I love seas, mountains, rivers, plants, and living things.
I want to be like warm winter sunshine.
